Heat waves are not just defined by daytime temperatures but also by nighttime conditions. Tropical nights, defined as nights where temperatures remain above 20 degrees Celsius, pose additional health risks. Vienna has been disproportionately affected, with eight municipal districts recording 30 tropical nights. Other major cities, except for Eisenstadt and Linz, had fewer than ten tropical nights. Only 548 municipalities across Austria reported no tropical nights this year, down from 1207 last year. This year has set records in terms of both heat days and tropical nights. The temperature levels observed are higher than those recorded during previous record years, including 2003 and 2024. The CSH evaluated two key factors: the heat index, which measures the actual number of days exceeding 30 degrees Celsius, and the heat stress index, which combines the number of heat days with the proportion of the population over 65 years old, who are especially vulnerable to heat-related illnesses. Carinthia, Burgenland, and Lower Austria face the highest heat stress due to their larger elderly populations. Eastern regions continue to experience a higher level of heat stress compared to western areas, where the proportion of older residents is lower. This disparity highlights the uneven impact of rising temperatures across different parts of the country. Hannah Schuster from the Complexity Science Hub and the University of Vienna emphasized the increasing frequency of heatwaves and their significant health impacts, particularly on the elderly. Between 2015 and 2022, each additional heat day increased mortality rates in Austrian districts by 2.4 percent per 1,000 inhabitants. When more than a quarter of a district's population is over 65, this effect doubles. Schuster noted that extreme weather events are becoming more common, especially in urban areas. She suggested that urban planning strategies such as green spaces and building modifications could help mitigate these effects. Additionally, she stressed the importance of providing accessible cooling options in areas experiencing frequent heat days. Medical facilities such as hospitals and nursing homes should not be overlooked, as they house many vulnerable individuals who are at greater risk during heatwaves.
