Not so much, claims study of Neanderthal bones A new study suggests that the differences in how men and women walk today might trace back to evolutionary adaptations in the pelvis. According to research published in Scientific Reports, male Neanderthals had pelvis structures remarkably similar to those of modern human males, while female Neanderthals shared anatomical traits with contemporary women. This finding challenges previous assumptions about the role of reproductive biology in shaping human evolution. The research, led by Prof. Yoel Rak of Tel Aviv University’s Department of Anatomy and Anthropology, analyzed Neanderthal pelvises discovered in two locations, Kebara Cave in Israel and Sima de los Huesos in Spain. These specimens, dating back approximately 130,000 to 40,000 years, allowed scientists to compare ancient anatomy with that of modern humans for the first time. The results suggest that the male pelvis evolved to support long-distance walking with greater efficiency, whereas female pelvises retained features more akin to those of Neanderthals due to biological constraints tied to reproduction. Rak explained that the key distinction lies in the positioning of the acetabulum, the hip joint. In modern human males, the hip sits further forward on the pelvic ring compared to both modern human females and male Neanderthals. This arrangement lowers the body’s center of mass, reducing strain on the joints and allowing for a more energy-efficient gait. The study describes this as a biomechanical advantage that enables the thighs to absorb impact, store energy during each step, and then release it to propel the body forward. “This evolution made the male a perfect walking machine,” Rak stated. The study notes that this structural adaptation likely gave early humans an edge in endurance activities such as hunting or traveling long distances. However, female pelvises could not undergo the same modifications because of the need for a wider birth canal and a shallower pelvic shape to accommodate childbirth. As a result, the female pelvis has remained largely unchanged from its Neanderthal ancestor, preserving certain anatomical characteristics that limit walking efficiency. Anthropologists previously believed the broader pelvis of Neanderthals was linked to longer gestation periods or the delivery of larger-headed infants. But the discovery of two nearly complete male Neanderthal pelvises changed this perspective. These specimens showed that the Neanderthal pelvis was not fundamentally different from that of modern humans, except in specific aspects related to the placement of the hip joint. The study highlights how evolutionary pressures shaped the human form in ways that still influence modern anatomy. While male pelvises have continued to adapt over time to enhance walking performance, female pelvises have remained relatively stable due to reproductive demands. This dynamic has implications beyond physical movement, influencing historical patterns of labor division and mobility among early human societies. The research team included collaborators from Spain, the Technion, Bar-Ilan University, and Ono Academic College. They emphasized that the findings, though based on a limited sample size, offer new insights into the interplay between anatomy, function, and evolution. The study also raises questions about how these anatomical differences may have affected social behaviors and survival strategies in prehistoric communities. As the field of paleoanthropology continues to uncover more evidence, the role of reproductive biology in shaping human evolution becomes increasingly clear. The Neanderthal pelvis, once considered a puzzle, now appears to hold clues about the complex forces that have influenced human development over thousands of years.
