A large fire broke out near Koblenz, Germany, prompting a coordinated effort between local firefighters and farmers to contain the blaze. The incident occurred on the outskirts of the town, where a field fire ignited dry vegetation and quickly spread to a woodpile located along the edge of a forest. Strong winds exacerbated the situation, causing flames to leap high into the air and set trees ablaze. Despite multiple fire departments being deployed, initial efforts to control the fire proved challenging due to its rapid expansion and remote location. The fire was initially reported around 6:30 p.m., with crews working through the night until approximately 5:30 a.m. when the operation concluded. Firefighters faced difficulties accessing water sources, as there were no hydrants nearby. Their hoses had to be laid out manually, which slowed down the response. However, the situation changed dramatically when local farmers offered their assistance. Among them was Ruedi Gfeller, a farmer who owns a farm in Koblenz. His son, Ivan, filled a large manure tanker with 15,000 liters of water from the family’s cistern and drove it to the site. Additional farmers followed suit, bringing their own water-filled containers to aid in extinguishing the flames. Together, the farmers contributed a total of 60,000 liters of water, significantly enhancing the firefighting capacity. Using a spray nozzle originally designed for spreading manure over long distances, Ivan directed the water directly onto the burning woodpile. This method proved highly effective, allowing the fire to be smothered before it could spread further. The combined effort of the firefighters and farmers played a crucial role in preventing the fire from expanding into the surrounding forest. Fire department commander Tanja Fritschi expressed her gratitude for the support received. She noted that the ability of the farmers’ equipment to release large volumes of water in one go had a far greater impact than traditional fire hoses. “A single barrel can deliver more water than our fire trucks,” she explained. The collaboration helped avoid potential damage to the area, particularly given the current drought conditions, which made the ground extremely dry and prone to underground fires that could have been difficult to detect and extinguish. This type of cooperation between farmers and emergency services is not uncommon in Germany, where large wildfires are more frequent compared to Switzerland. According to Fritschi, such partnerships are part of established protocols, with fire departments maintaining contact information for local farmers. A digital platform called Red Farmer connects farmers with fire brigades, facilitating communication during emergencies. This system has proven useful in ensuring quick responses and resource sharing when needed. While the fire was eventually contained, the experience highlights the importance of community-based disaster preparedness. The involvement of local farmers demonstrated how agricultural resources can complement official emergency services, especially in rural areas where infrastructure may be limited. As the region continues to face challenges related to climate change and increasing wildfire risks, such collaborative approaches may become even more vital in protecting both human lives and natural environments.
