The German government has mandated the implementation of electronic invoicing (e-Rechnung) for businesses-to-government (B2G) transactions starting in 2025. This regulatory shift requires software developers and providers of accounting and ERP systems to adapt their applications to meet new legal and technical standards. A recent workshop organized by iX, titled “E-Rechnungspflicht: Software richtig implementieren,” offered professionals a hands-on guide to navigating these changes. The workshop, held over three mornings in late October 2026, focused on practical application of XML-based invoice formats such as Cross Industry Invoice (CII), Universal Business Language (UBL), Factur-X, and ZUGFeRD, which are required for B2G interactions. Participants were taught how to support, verify, and convert these formats within their software solutions. The training emphasized understanding roles, formatting specifics, conversion processes, and implementation strategies, with exercises designed to familiarize attendees with the different XML structures. A key feature of the workshop was its interactive format. Attendees engaged in real-time problem-solving during shared online sessions, followed by independent work periods where they tackled specific tasks. These assignments were later reviewed in group discussions with instructors, allowing participants to address practical challenges and receive direct feedback. This structure enabled a gradual deepening of knowledge through applied learning. The event took place entirely online, with sessions scheduled from 9:00 to 12:30 each day. Led by two experts with extensive experience in the field, the session combined academic knowledge with industry practice. Andreas Pelekies, a technical innovator behind the ZUGFeRD standard and co-author of several international standards, brought a foundational perspective. Jochen Stärk, a diploma computer scientist and seasoned backend developer specializing in e-invoicing, contributed practical expertise. Their dual approach ensured a comprehensive coverage of both technical and operational aspects. Participants included software developers, project managers, and system integrators working on invoicing solutions. Additionally, manufacturers of ERP and accounting software, along with data scientists handling invoice data analysis, found the content relevant. The small group size facilitated personalized interaction, enabling attendees to discuss specific technical issues and gain insights from individuals directly involved in standard development and real-world implementation. The workshop addressed the growing need for compliance with digital invoicing mandates, particularly in public sector procurement. As more countries adopt similar regulations, the ability to process and generate compliant invoices becomes increasingly critical. By offering targeted training, the event supported professionals in preparing their systems for future requirements and ensuring seamless integration with governmental platforms.
