An Umlazi woman, Sibongile Happiness Ngwadla, has pleaded guilty to kidnapping and murdering a five-year-old boy, Simphiwe Ntobeko Xaba, in August 2025. The crime was motivated by gambling debts and resentment toward the child's mother, whom Ngwadla blamed for introducing her to online gambling. She kidnapped the child, demanded R60,000 in ransom via a burner phone, and attempted to strangle him before drowning him in a river to avoid detection. Despite attempts to mislead authorities by falsely claiming the child's mother had killed him, Ngwadla was arrested and faces sentencing. Her legal representative read her plea statement during court proceedings, which included expressions of remorse.
Bias read (Center): While the case involves a serious criminal act and potential societal concerns around gambling and child safety, the article presents the facts objectively without overt ideological framing. It focuses on the individual's actions and motivations rather than broader political or policy implications.
