Haxhiu e Kurti e vlerësojnë akt historik Deklaratën e 2 Korrikut

On the 36th anniversary of the 2 Korrikut Declaration, Alban Haxhiu, the President of Kosovo, praised the declaration as a historically significant act in Kosovo's journey toward statehood. She emphasized that the declaration allowed Kosovo to speak for itself and demand freedom rather than political privileges, countering Serbian attempts to suppress Kosovo's voice. Haxhiu highlighted the courage of those who supported and drafted the declaration, noting its role in establishing institutions and shaping Kosovo's identity. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Albin Kurti described the declaration as a foundational legal and normative act of the Republic of Kosovo, stating that without it, Kosovo's independence in 2008 would not have been possible. The declaration was adopted by Kosovo's parliament deputies in Pristina despite Serbian authorities blocking access, marking a pivotal moment in Kosovo's resistance against Serbian rule.

On June 2, 2026, leaders of Kosovo marked the 36th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitutional Declaration on February 2, 1990. This declaration was recognized as one of the most significant acts in Kosovo’s journey toward statehood. Current officials, including Acting President Albulena Haxhiu and Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, emphasized its historical importance during commemorative events held in Pristina. The declaration was adopted under challenging circumstances when Serbian authorities had prevented delegates from entering the parliament building. Despite these obstacles, the declaration was signed in Pristina, asserting Kosovo's status as an equal entity within the Yugoslav federation and opposing the removal of its autonomy by the regime of Slobodan Milošević.

Haxhiu highlighted how, despite limited space for action, Kosovo managed to assert itself as a distinct political entity rather than being treated as part of Serbia. She noted that the declaration aimed to speak on behalf of Kosovo and seek freedom, not political privileges. According to Haxhiu, this act laid the foundation for subsequent developments such as the adoption of the Constitution of Kačanik on July 7, 1990, followed by the independence referendum and other political initiatives of the 1990s. These efforts were crucial in maintaining Kosovo’s identity and resisting imposed amendments and sanctions.

Albin Kurti described the February 2 declaration as a foundational and legal proclamation of the Republic of Kosovo. He stated that without the republic established in 1990 and the subsequent acts, Kosovo would not have achieved independence in 2008. Kurti emphasized that the path to sovereignty was built upon decisions and sacrifices made during that historic period. The declaration was seen as marking the beginning of the resistance republic and laying the groundwork for Kosovo’s statehood.

The Constitutional Declaration of February 2, 1990, was adopted by the deputies of the then-Kosovo Assembly before the parliament building in Pristina, as Serbian authorities had blocked their entry. With this act, Kosovo declared itself an equal unit within the Yugoslav federation, opposing the removal of its autonomy by the regime of Slobodan Milošević. It is considered one of the foundational acts of Kosovo's statehood and paved the way for the adoption of the Kačanik Constitution on July 7, 1990.

In addition to commemorating the constitutional declaration, Haxhiu also addressed the significance of American support in Kosovo’s history. On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of American independence, she emphasized the intertwined histories of America and Albania, highlighting moments where the principles of liberty and self-determination were pivotal. She noted that the American Revolution answered the question of who has the right to govern and where this right originates, stating that power derives from the people and must remain within the bounds of law, representation, and equality.

Haxhiu mentioned figures such as Fan Noli and Faik Konica, emphasizing their roles in shaping Albanian identity and advocating for independence. She also highlighted the role of Hasan Prishtina in giving voice to Kosovo’s aspirations for self-determination. During the recent conflict in Kosovo, American leadership under President Bill Clinton, particularly through Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, supported diplomatic efforts that helped prevent further conflict and opened the door for Kosovo’s path to freedom.

Haxhiu concluded by expressing gratitude towards the United States for its support, noting that the best way to honor this assistance is by building a just and sovereign state. She cited Walt Whitman, suggesting that Albanians found their place in American history early on. Her speech underscored the deep appreciation for American friendship and the commitment to constructing a fair state based on the freedom achieved.
