Dagmar Havel has withdrawn her consent to use the name Václav Havel

Dagmar Havlová, bývalá první dáma a spoluzakladatelka Knihovny Václava Havla, odvolala svůj souhlas s užíváním jména Václav Havel. V květnu 2026 opustil téměř celý tým zaměstnanců knihovny, což způsobilo finanční krizi a odchod hlavních mecenášů, včetně manželů Zdeněka a Michaely Bakalových. Po rozpadu správní rady zůstal jako jediný člen David Dušek, který začal vyjednávat o poskytnutí práv s Nadací VIZE 97 a Dagmar Havlovou, ale ta odmítla.

The 60th anniversary of the International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary will serve as both a celebration of cinema and a tribute to the late Czech President Václav Havel, who passed away in 2011. The festival, which runs from July 3rd to 11th this year, has chosen to honor Havel’s legacy alongside its cinematic offerings. This decision reflects his deep connection to the spa town, where he often returned, and his close friendship with the festival's current president, Jiří Bartoška, who died earlier this year. The tribute also includes a special exhibition dedicated to Havel, as well as participation from Dagmar Havelová, Havel’s widow, who is set to take part in discussions related to films shown during the event. The festival’s main media partners are Novinky and Právo, ensuring wide coverage of these tributes.

In addition to the film festival, another significant development has emerged regarding the use of Václav Havel’s name in public institutions. Specifically, Dagmar Havelová, Havel’s former first lady, announced that she had revoked her consent for the use of her husband’s name in the title of the Václav Havel Library. This decision was made due to her loss of trust in the library’s current leadership and direction. She expressed concern over how the name of the first president of the Czech Republic was being used and stated that she no longer wished to bear responsibility for such usage.

Havelová emphasized that she believed it would be natural to provide archival, documentary, research, and other materials related to her late husband to a public institution for their long-term protection, professional care, and accessibility to the public. However, she clarified that she would be open to reconsidering her stance if a future organization or group proved capable of developing and maintaining Havel’s legacy in a sustainable manner. Her decision comes after a series of internal conflicts within the library that led to the resignation of several key figures, including the director, economist Tomáš Sedláček, who was placed on so-called “procedural obstacles” by the board, effectively halting his operations.

The Václav Havel Library was founded in 2004 by Havelová, along with former politicians Karl Schwarzenberg and Miloslav Petrus. At the time, Havel had already left the presidential office, and since then, Havelová had neither worked nor been involved in the library’s administration. In March 2025, Sedláček became the new director, bringing with him a vision for the library’s broader role. However, tensions soon arose between the new management and the rest of the staff, culminating in early May 2026 when nearly the entire team resigned due to dissatisfaction with the way the library was being run.

This turmoil prompted some of the library’s most important patrons to distance themselves from the institution. Among them were the Bakal family, who had previously provided substantial financial support—covering almost half of the library’s operational costs, amounting to around 10 million crowns annually in 2024 alone. Their withdrawal marked a major blow to the library’s stability. Following this, Havelová herself stepped back from her involvement with the project, and subsequently, the entire board of directors resigned, leaving only David Dušek, the chairman of the board, still in place.

Despite these challenges, the library did not officially dissolve. Instead, both the board and the supervisory committee were gradually expanded with new members, including Tomáš Šidlák. Dušek took on the role of crisis manager and began negotiations with the VIZE 97 Foundation and Havelová about granting personal rights to the name and activities of the library. However, Havelová ultimately refused to grant such rights, reinforcing her position that the library needed to demonstrate a more responsible approach before she could consider allowing the continued use of her husband’s name.

The situation surrounding the Václav Havel Library highlights ongoing debates about the appropriate stewardship of historical legacies in public institutions. While Havelová remains committed to preserving her husband’s intellectual and cultural contributions, she insists that they must be managed with integrity and transparency. Her recent decision underscores the complexity of balancing personal responsibility with institutional accountability, particularly when dealing with the names and legacies of national figures. As the library continues to navigate these challenges, its future will depend on whether it can find a new path forward that aligns with the values and expectations of those who originally envisioned its creation.
