Haryana, Rajasthan sign MoU to implement 1994 Yamuna water agreement

Haryana and Rajasthan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on June 29, 2026, to implement the 1994 Upper Yamuna River Board (UYRB) agreement, which aims to provide water to Rajasthan from the Hathini Kund barrage during the monsoon season. The agreement, delayed for 32 years due to the lack of infrastructure, involves transferring water via an underground pipeline connected to the Western Yamuna Canal system. The project is expected to address drinking water shortages in several districts of Rajasthan, including Churu, Sikar, and Jhunjhunu. Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil confirmed that a consensus on the implementation framework was reached earlier in June 2026, and the MoU was formalized under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma called the development a historic milestone, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the initiative.
