Former Cambridge professor found dead; involved in plagiarism scandal

A 41-year-old British academic, Jason Arday, was found dead in his south London home on Friday, according to the Metropolitan Police. Arday, who had resigned from the University of Cambridge earlier this month amid allegations of plagiarism and accusations of racism, was discovered unconscious by emergency services. The university confirmed the death in a brief statement, expressing deep sorrow over the tragic news. “We are profoundly saddened by this terrible news,” said Deborah Prentice, the university’s top official. She extended condolences to Arday’s family and friends during this difficult time. Arday, known for being the youngest Black professor at Cambridge since 2023, had faced mounting scrutiny following claims that parts of his doctoral thesis were plagiarized. The controversy escalated in July after American academic Nathan Cofnas, who himself was expelled from Cambridge in 2024 due to racist allegations, published reports questioning Arday’s work. Cofnas accused Arday of copying sections from other works, leading to increased media attention. The Times and Telegraph ran investigative pieces on both his academic and personal life. Some of Arday’s personal claims, including that he once ran 30 marathons in 35 days and raised millions for charities, were also called into question. In early August, Arday announced his resignation from both his teaching position and his role as a fellow at Jesus College. He described the decision as the only way to end a “difficult period,” though he insisted it should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt. In a letter published online, he denied the narratives surrounding him, calling them unfair. The Metropolitan Police stated they received a call from London’s ambulance service reporting a man found unconscious inside a residence in the Battersea neighborhood. The officer added that the man, identified as Arday, was pronounced dead at the scene. At this stage, the death is considered unexpected but not suspicious, with an investigation ongoing. UK Education Secretary Lucy Powell expressed her shock and sadness over the news, acknowledging the gravity of the situation. The case has drawn widespread attention, reflecting broader tensions around academic integrity and diversity policies within higher education institutions. Arday, in an interview with The Times earlier this month, acknowledged making “academic errors” but argued he was being unfairly portrayed as a “liar, a fantasist, and an academic fraud.” He also claimed the campaign against him was racially motivated. His memoir, titled Great and Unfortunate Things, includes accounts of his childhood diagnosis of autism and developmental delays, detailing how he did not speak until age 11 and learned to read and write only at 18.
