The S-Bahn between Floridsdorf and Hauptbahnhof in Vienna has been closed due to a cable fire, adding to existing disruptions caused by summer construction work. The closure affects a large portion of the network, with multiple sections of the S-Bahn currently out of service. Despite these challenges, the intervals of the Vienna Transport Company (Wiener Linien) remain unchanged for now. The situation worsened after a cable fire near the Praterstern station on Thursday night. This incident forced the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) to activate an emergency schedule, which included the premature implementation of a planned 14-month main closure of the track between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof. Originally scheduled to begin on September 7, this closure was pushed forward following the damage caused by the fire. The closure covers a section of the main line stretching from Floridsdorf through Praterstern to the central station. The extent of the damage is significant. According to the ÖBB, approximately 20 kilometers of cables need replacement, including those essential for power supply, telecommunications, and overhead lines. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with officials stating that it is “under examination.” The disruption has led to partial shutdowns along key routes, affecting both local and regional commuters. Passengers using the S-Bahn face considerable delays and reduced services. While the Wiener Linien continues to operate its regular schedule, the emergency plan includes increased frequency on certain lines within the city’s public transport network. This means more frequent departures on the U1, U2, U4, and U6 lines, as well as on streetcars O, 62, and 18. However, passengers should expect longer travel times and crowded conditions during peak hours. To mitigate the impact, the ÖBB has arranged alternative transportation options. A direct shuttle bus operates between Wien-Meidling and Längenfeldgasse, offering additional connectivity to the U4 line. Additionally, some bus routes have been adjusted to cover parts of the affected S-Bahn corridors, providing temporary access between stations such as Floridsdorf and Praterstern, as well as Traisengasse and Handelskai. Despite these measures, the overall situation remains challenging for commuters. The combination of ongoing construction projects and the recent fire has created a complex web of disruptions. Passengers are advised to check for real-time updates and consider using alternative modes of transport during peak times. The ÖBB recommends utilizing the Vienna public transport network as much as possible, especially during busy periods. With limited direct rail alternatives available beyond certain points, the focus is on maximizing capacity within the existing system. This approach aims to ensure that passengers can still reach their destinations despite the current constraints. As investigations into the cause of the fire continue, further adjustments to the schedule may be necessary. For now, the emphasis remains on maintaining operational continuity while addressing the immediate effects of the closures and disruptions. Commuters are encouraged to stay informed and adapt their travel plans accordingly.
