The Interoceanic Train, which has experienced two derailments, including one in Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca, has faced severe budget cuts over the past two years, resulting in minimal investment in infrastructure and maintenance. According to an analysis by El Universal, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) reduced the budget allocated for the operation and conservation of this railway infrastructure by more than 90% between 2025 and 2026, cutting over 43 billion pesos. Despite congressional approval of multi-million peso budgets to consolidate the project, the actual funds spent were significantly lower due to these reductions. The train officially began cargo service on December 17, 2023, and passenger service was inaugurated on December 22, 2023, along Line Z (Salina Cruz-Coatzacoalcos). Initially estimated at 20 billion pesos, the overall cost of developing the route increased substantially due to technical adjustments, delays, and track rehabilitation, ultimately exceeding 62 billion pesos. Line Z, where the recent derailment occurred, accounted for 12 billion pesos of the total cost.
