Gunmen kill vigilante leader, three women in Rivers

Gunmen killed Ozemela Nwaocha, the Omoku Zonal Commander of the Security Planning and Advisory Committee, along with three women, in Rivers State, according to authorities. The attack took place near Nwaocha's residence in Omoku, the headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area. The incident was confirmed by the Rivers State Police Command, which expressed deep sorrow over the violence and vowed to pursue justice against the perpetrators. The attack occurred on Tuesday evening, as reported by the security committee spokesman, Nkem Godknows. He described the assault as a Gestapo-style operation, during which the gunmen targeted Nwaocha while he was with his sister and two other women. According to Godknows, the assailants fired repeatedly at the group, killing Nwaocha and the three accompanying women. Two additional individuals inside the premises were injured and are being treated in hospital. The security committee condemned the attack and called for greater support for vigilante groups, highlighting the lack of financial backing and recognition they often face. Police spokesperson Blessing Agabe confirmed the details of the incident during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. She noted that the attack happened close to Nwaocha’s home and that initial investigations indicated the gunmen engaged the vigilante leader and his companions with gunfire. Agabe emphasized that the police command is investigating the case and has asked the public to come forward with any relevant information. She reiterated the department’s commitment to bringing the perpetrators to justice and maintaining public safety. Godknows further explained that the vigilante organization faces significant challenges, including inadequate funding and minimal encouragement from government bodies. He stated that many members of the group operate without proper compensation or reliable income, making their work perilous. The security committee has requested assistance from the Rivers State Government and other stakeholders to better equip and recognize the contributions of these community defenders. Following the attack, law enforcement and local vigilante groups have intensified their presence in the area, restoring a sense of normalcy.
