HKA retired American teacher named Ronald Sakolsky, who previously taught English in China, has reunited with a Chinese farmer named Yin Yuzhen after 26 years. In 1999, Sakolsky learned about Yin's efforts to combat desertification in the Mu Us Desert and donated $5,000 to support her work. The two met in 2000 during a donation ceremony, after which Sakolsky returned to the U.S., while Yin used the funds to plant over 50,000 trees. Today, more than 80% of the Mu Us Desert, one of China's major sandy regions, is covered in vegetation.
