Govt suspends aid for 1.49 mln recipients linked to online gambling

The Indonesian government has suspended social assistance for approximately 1.49 million recipients linked to online gambling activity, according to officials from the Ministry of Social Affairs. This action follows a review of data cross-referenced with the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK), which identified suspicious financial patterns among beneficiaries of the country’s basic food assistance program. The move comes amid growing concerns over the misuse of public welfare funds and marks one of the largest interventions into social aid distribution in recent years. The suspension affects 1,494,652 beneficiary families under the Basic Food Assistance Program, many of whom have been flagged due to transactions associated with online gambling platforms. According to Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf, the decision was made after uncovering evidence suggesting that these individuals had misused their allocated assistance. He stated that the ministry is currently conducting an in-depth investigation to verify the extent of the issue and determine whether these recipients still meet eligibility criteria for continued support. Of the 1.49 million affected families, 794,475 are also registered participants in the Family Hope Program (PKH), a broader initiative aimed at reducing poverty through targeted financial aid. The number of flagged cases represents a sharp increase from similar reviews conducted in 2023, which identified around 600,000 instances of potential misuse. Officials noted that the current figures highlight a growing trend of abuse within the system, prompting urgent calls for stricter oversight mechanisms. The ministry is working alongside the PPATK and the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs to analyze transaction records and confirm whether the aid was indeed diverted toward gambling-related expenses. This collaborative effort aims to refine the National Socio-Economic Single Data (DTSEN), a centralized database designed to streamline access to social services and ensure that benefits reach those most in need. Minister Yusuf emphasized that the updated data would help prevent future instances of fraud and ensure resources are directed appropriately. Efforts to address the issue extend beyond administrative measures. The ministry has intensified educational campaigns targeting beneficiary families, urging them to safeguard their accounts against unauthorized use. These initiatives involve PKH facilitators and social workers who provide guidance on responsible financial management and digital security. “Beneficiaries must remain vigilant,” Yusuf warned, adding that allowing others to access their accounts could lead to legal consequences. The crackdown on suspected misuse follows earlier reports indicating that certain regions, including West Java, have higher numbers of aid recipients engaged in online gambling. Local authorities have been monitoring these trends closely, raising questions about the effectiveness of existing safeguards against exploitation. While the ministry insists that its actions are based on verified data, some critics argue that more transparency is needed regarding how beneficiaries are selected and monitored. Officials have set a deadline for completing the initial assessment by the end of the coming week, after which further decisions on reinstating aid or implementing additional restrictions may be made. Until then, the affected families face uncertainty about their continued access to essential support programs.
