President Bola Tinubu has publicly lauded Zamfara State Governor Dr Dauda Lawal, calling him a “Renaissance governor” who has driven positive transformation in the state. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu highlighted Lawal’s contributions to infrastructure development, urban renewal, and industrial growth. The President specifically noted the governor’s focus on human capital and social services, including the rehabilitation of over 800 schools, recruitment of more than 2,000 teachers, hospital upgrades, and provision of medical supplies throughout Zamfara. Tinubu emphasized that Lawal’s multi-sectoral governance strategy aligns with his vision of holistic development, particularly in enhancing the quality of life for citizens. The commendation came as Lawal celebrated his birthday, with Tinubu expressing wishes for his continued service to the state and the nation. Dauda Lawal, who took office as governor in 2023, has faced considerable scrutiny and criticism in the early stages of his tenure. However, according to Sulaiman Bala Idris, the spokesperson for the Zamfara State Governor, Lawal has evolved significantly since assuming power. Bala described Lawal’s leadership as a reflection of Structural Functionalism, a sociological theory that emphasizes the interdependence of societal institutions. He noted that Lawal’s governance approach mirrors the principles of Talcott Parsons' AGIL model, adaptation, goal attainment, integration, and latency, by addressing the complex needs of the state through coordinated efforts across key sectors. Bala pointed to Lawal’s success in increasing the state’s Internal Generation of Revenue (IGR) from 90 million naira to over 5 billion naira per month, attributing this achievement to his strategic application of empirical methods and direct observation. He further suggested that Lawal’s leadership demonstrates a deep understanding of sociological theories, potentially drawing inspiration from thinkers such as Auguste Comte and Emile Durkheim. Lawal’s tenure has also been marked by efforts to rebuild trust with both domestic and international stakeholders. During his time in office, he successfully engaged foreign donors, including the World Bank, which had previously withdrawn support due to concerns over transparency. This engagement led to the resumption of funding for critical developmental projects in Zamfara. Former Cross River State Governor and PRP presidential candidate Donald Duke has criticized President Tinubu’s governance record, asserting that while Tinubu is a skilled politician, his administration lacks effectiveness in delivering tangible improvements to citizens’ lives. During an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Duke stated that Tinubu has lost public support due to worsening economic conditions and growing disillusionment among Nigerians. He argued that Tinubu’s governance has failed to address pressing issues such as inflation, unemployment, and insecurity, leading to a decline in public confidence. Despite acknowledging Tinubu’s political acumen, Duke stressed that his administration’s weaknesses in governance pose a risk to the country’s future. He warned that unless there is a significant improvement in policy execution, Tinubu’s chances of securing another term could be jeopardized. The contrast between Tinubu’s praise for Lawal and Duke’s critique of Tinubu underscores the divergent perspectives within Nigerian politics.
