Google unveils latest Pixel phones with slimmer cameras and more AI features

Google revealed its latest generation of Pixel smartphones on Wednesday, featuring thinner camera modules, enhanced artificial intelligence capabilities, and increased storage capacity. The new devices, including the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and the foldable Pixel Pro Fold, are available for pre-order in the United States beginning immediately. Prices range from $900 for the base model to $1,900 for the high-end foldable variant, marking a $100 price hike compared to last year's offerings. The new Pixel lineup introduces several AI-driven features aimed at simplifying user interaction with their devices. These enhancements include the ability to extract images from videos, a built-in teleprompter function, advanced video stabilization, and an upgraded speech-to-text system. According to Forrester senior analyst Andrew Cornwall, these features represent a strategic push by Google to encourage users to upgrade their devices and adopt its expanding suite of AI tools. Google has been progressively integrating more AI into its Pixel phones since 2023. This effort comes amid growing competition in the smartphone market, particularly with Apple, which has been slower to incorporate similar AI advancements. Although Apple announced new AI developments in June, its approach focuses heavily on privacy and security, utilizing Google's Gemini AI model to achieve this balance. The new Pixel phones offer significantly larger internal storage options, starting at 256 gigabytes, doubling the previous minimum capacity. They also boast extended battery life, providing up to 30 hours of usage, along with faster wireless charging speeds. Notably, the 128 gigabyte version of the Pixel 11, previously priced at $800, has been discontinued. Among the standout features of the new Pixel models are live translation for videos, podcasts, and voice messages. The Pro variants introduce a feature known as HiLight, allowing users to designate a specific color for preferred contacts. When such a contact calls and the phone is placed face down, the device illuminates in the assigned color. This feature works alongside the existing "Flip to Shhh" functionality, which activates "do not disturb" mode when the phone is face down. To further entice users to embrace its AI ecosystem, Google is offering a complimentary six-month subscription to its AI Pro plan for buyers of the more expensive Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL models. This initiative aims to increase adoption of the Gemini AI toolkit, which Google has developed to rival OpenAI's ChatGPT. Camera improvements are another key aspect of the new Pixel phones. A new mode called Magic Capture enables users to take multiple photographs and videos with a single press of the shutter button. Enhanced light sensitivity and improved performance in low-light conditions are also highlighted, particularly in the Pro models, where Instant Night Sight allows for quicker capture of images in dimly lit environments without requiring the user to keep the phone steady during exposure. In addition to hardware and software updates, Google has introduced a new product called Pixel Tag, a tracking device compatible with Android 9 or newer versions. Priced at $30 per unit or $100 for a set of four, Pixel Tag offers users a convenient way to track personal items. The release of these new Pixel phones underscores Google's ongoing commitment to innovation within the smartphone industry, emphasizing both hardware improvements and the integration of advanced AI technologies to enhance user experience and drive consumer engagement.
