Google’s AI overviews reinforce some conspiracy theories – new research

New research published in the journal Media International Australia reveals that Google's AI-generated search result summaries can sometimes reinforce conspiracy theories, particularly when users employ search terms that align with conspiratorial beliefs. The study examined two conspiracy theories: 'chemtrails' and '15-minute cities.' While Google has previously taken steps to demote harmful content related to chemtrails, the AI overviews still occasionally present misleading information, especially when search queries include less common or explicitly conspiratorial wording. For instance, searches like '15 minute city segregation' produced summaries that did not adequately challenge the conspiracy narrative. Although the AI summaries do attempt to debunk these theories, the responses are often superficial and fail to provide comprehensive refutations.

Bias read (Center): The article presents findings from academic research without overtly favoring any political perspective. It discusses the potential risks of AI-generated content reinforcing conspiracy theories but remains neutral in its tone, focusing on the need for improved safeguards rather than taking a stance.
