Google: Android backups are now credited to the cloud storage

Starting July 7, 2026, Google will begin counting additional data types—such as call logs, device settings, and app data—toward users' Google Account cloud storage quotas, alongside photos and videos uploaded to Google Photos. This change applies first to new backup users, with existing accounts transitioning over the coming months. The average backup size is expected to increase by approximately 40 MB due to these additions. Google has introduced more control options, allowing users to selectively include or exclude specific apps, SMS/MMS messages, call logs, and device settings in their backups. These updates were initially reported by 9to5Google. Users can access backup settings via 'Google Services & Settings' > 'Manage Backup' > 'Other Device Data' on Pixel devices, while non-Pixel devices have this option under the 'Google' section in settings. Google stated that these changes aim to provide greater transparency and flexibility regarding which data and apps are backed up. Google provides 15 GB of free cloud storage per account, with paid upgrades available through Google One starting at 100 GB for €2/month. Since 2024, WhatsApp backups using the cloud feature have been facted
