Göbeklitepe expands access as visitor numbers grow

Göbeklitepe, the ancient archaeological site in southern Turkey, is undergoing major infrastructure upgrades to handle growing visitor numbers, according to local authorities. The UNESCO World Heritage site, known as the “zero point of history,” is expanding its accessibility through improved roads and redesigned walking paths. Located 18 kilometers from central Şanlıurfa near the village of Örencik, the site attracts approximately one million visitors each year. These enhancements aim to improve the visitor experience and reduce overcrowding. The changes include converting a previously single-lane road into a dual carriageway, which will ease traffic flow and accommodate more vehicles. Pedestrian pathways surrounding the site are also being expanded, made wheelchair-accessible, and extended to nearly double their original length. These modifications are part of ongoing efforts to manage the increasing number of tourists visiting the site, which has become one of Turkey's most popular archaeological attractions since its discovery in 1963 during initial archaeological surveys. Aydın Aslan, the provincial director of culture and tourism for Şanlıurfa, highlighted the rapid rise in interest in Göbeklitepe, noting that 2019 was officially designated as the “Year of Göbeklitepe.” He explained that the improvements, coordinated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, are intended to enhance the visitor experience and alleviate congestion. Aslan emphasized that the new walking paths will allow visitors to explore more of the site, reducing crowding in specific areas. “We are opening up more of the site,” he stated, adding that visitors will now have the opportunity to enjoy panoramic views of the Harran Plain due to the site’s elevated position. Mehmet Kamil Türkmen, head of the Şanlıurfa Tourism Development Association, expressed confidence that these developments will positively impact both tourism and visitor capacity. He noted that the expanded routes and the planned opening of additional archaeological sections will contribute to the creation of a broader circular visitor trail. This initiative will enable tourists to explore parts of the site that were previously inaccessible, enriching their overall experience. Furthermore, Türkmen pointed out that the road expansion will not only facilitate more tourist arrivals but also encourage visitors to stay longer in Şanlıurfa. By improving connectivity and enhancing the visitor experience, the project aims to boost local economic activity and promote sustainable tourism practices. The increased accessibility is expected to draw even more international and domestic tourists, further solidifying Göbeklitepe’s status as a key cultural destination in Turkey.
