Gauteng admissions surge past 210,000 within hours of 2027 application window opening

Gauteng’s online admissions system saw a record number of applications within hours of its 2027 application window opening, with more than 210,000 Grade 1 and Grade 8 entries submitted by midday on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. The Gauteng Department of Education confirmed the surge, noting that the system went live at 8am and processed 210,055 applications by 12pm. This marks another milestone in the province’s ongoing efforts to streamline and modernise the school placement process. The spike in applications came despite a brief pre-launch buildup, with 12,058 parents joining the online queue between 7.30am and 7.59am in anticipation of the system going live. The department stated that the application process proceeded without major technical issues, reinforcing the reliability of the platform. The strong turnout underscores continued public confidence in the online admissions system, which has been gradually improving since its introduction in 2015. Demand varied across different districts, with the highest levels observed in Ekurhuleni South and Tshwane West. Among secondary schools, Hoërskool Langenhoven in Tshwane West received the most applications, with 1,168 submissions, followed by Alberton High School with 1,098 and Hoërskool Akasia with 917. At the primary level, Rachel de Beer Primary School attracted 474 applicants, Laerskool Akasia recorded 461, and Laerskool Voortrekker Eeufees received 411. These figures highlight the intense competition for available spots, particularly in popular schools. The Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Lebogang Maile, praised the public’s trust in the online admissions system. “This demonstrates the continued confidence that parents and guardians have in the Province's Online Admissions System,” she said. The department also highlighted recent improvements to the system, including enhanced stability, faster processing times, automated SMS notifications, and detailed information on schools’ language offerings. These upgrades aim to make the application process more efficient and transparent for families. Gauteng remains South Africa’s largest provincial education system, serving over 2.4 million learners across 2,111 public ordinary schools, including 37 Schools of Specialisation. Learner enrolment has shown consistent growth, with more than 23,000 additional students added to the system in the past year, equivalent to establishing roughly 19 new schools, each capable of accommodating around 1,200 learners. Since 2015, the online admissions system has facilitated the placement of approximately 400,000 entry-grade learners, reflecting its effectiveness in managing the growing educational demands. Maile urged parents to submit their applications promptly, emphasizing that applying early allows ample time to upload necessary documents and address any unresolved issues. She also cautioned against fraudulent activities, warning that the online admissions process is entirely free and that no individuals or organisations are authorized to charge fees for securing school placements. Parents seeking assistance can visit one of the 48 decentralised walk-in centres, district offices, provincial head office, or public schools for support throughout the application period. The 2027 online admissions application period will remain open until midnight on September 4, 2026. Parents can access the system via the Gauteng Department of Education’s online admissions portal. As the deadline approaches, the department continues to monitor the process and ensure smooth operations for all applicants.
