Gas fire crews have been working since early morning to deal with damage caused by heavy rain and strong winds across western Slovenia. The weather conditions led to fallen trees, flooded basements, and roof damage in several areas, including the municipality of Komen. According to reports from the Rescue and Protection Authority, emergency services were called to address these issues as soon as the morning hours. The storm system intensified later in the afternoon, affecting a larger portion of Slovenia. By around five in the evening, the authority recorded a higher number of interventions due to the storm’s impact. Affected areas included Žirovnica, Kanal, Tolmin, Novo Gorica, Komen, Sežana, Vipava, Ajdovščina, Cerkno, Idrija, Žiri, Škofja Loka, and others. In Šenčur, floodwaters from meteorological rainfall were reported, while in Cerknica, strong winds uncovered roofs. On the Ilirska Bistrica area, a tree fell onto the road. In the municipality of Komen, particularly in the neighborhoods of Čehovina, Kodreta, and Večkot, strong winds continued to uncover rooftops. The situation was compounded by the difficulty of accessing certain areas due to fallen trees blocking roads. Emergency teams faced challenges in reaching some villages, as noted by the head of the regional civil protection headquarters, Sandi Curk. In addition to the damage in Slovenia, the storm also affected parts of Croatia. On the island of Rab, nearly 100 millimeters of rain fell within a few hours, leading to significant flooding. A lightning strike reportedly hit a transformer station at a refinery near Rijeka, causing a power outage and smoke emissions. Croatian hydro-meteorological service issued orange weather warnings for the area around Rijeka, predicting further unstable weather conditions with heavy rains and wind speeds exceeding 65 kilometers per hour. Strong gusts of wind were also reported in other regions, such as Nova Gorica, where a tree fell onto a car, and in Idrija, where three industrial buildings had their roofs uncovered. Fallen trees disrupted traffic in multiple locations, creating additional hazards for drivers and emergency responders. Across Slovenia, the storm caused widespread power outages. Approximately 5,800 consumers were left without electricity on the Elektra Celje network, while over 9,300 consumers were affected in the Elektra Ljubljana region. The most severely impacted areas included Litija towards Ivančna Gorica and Trebnje, Črnomlje, Kočevje, Ribnica, Velika Lašč, Cerknica, and Stari trg near Lož. In the Elektra Primorska region, some trees fell onto electrical lines, though these incidents were being addressed promptly. Power restoration efforts are ongoing, with teams working intensively to repair damaged infrastructure. The utility companies emphasized that they are prioritizing safety while working to restore electricity supply as quickly as possible. Despite the challenging conditions, workers continue to operate under difficult circumstances, ensuring that essential services are gradually restored. As the storm system moved eastward overnight, further disruptions were reported in the Styrian region. Strong winds and heavy rainfall continued to affect different parts of the country, with some areas experiencing wind speeds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour. The National Weather Service has indicated that the severe weather conditions will gradually subside, with Saturday expected to bring mostly cloudy skies and occasional light rain. Daytime temperatures are projected to remain around 20 degrees Celsius.
