Gary Glitter charged with historical sexual offences

Former pop star Gary Glitter, known for his iconic glam rock persona during the 1970s, has been formally charged with multiple historical sexual offenses involving a minor. The allegations date back to the late 1970s and early 1980s, marking a significant legal development in the life of the 82-year-old musician, whose real name is Paul Gadd. According to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), Glitter faces four charges related to a single victim. These include one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14.

The charges stem from allegations made by a woman who claims the abuse occurred between 1978 and 1981. The CPS confirmed that its prosecutors have determined there is enough evidence to proceed with the case and that it serves the public interest to do so. This decision followed a thorough investigation conducted by the Metropolitan Police, which began when the allegations were initially reported to the force on 9 January 2025. Glitter was subsequently interviewed on 22 July 2025 as part of the ongoing inquiry.

The Metropolitan Police stated that the alleged offenses took place at a residential address in Kensington, where Glitter lived during that period. The police emphasized that the victim is receiving support from specialized officers and has been informed about the recent developments regarding the charges. The case is set to be heard in Westminster Magistrates’ Court in central London on 5 August, where Glitter, currently held at HMP Channings Wood, will make his appearance.

Gary Glitter rose to fame in the early 1970s as one of the most prominent figures in the glam rock movement. His career included numerous chart-topping hits such as "Rock And Roll (Parts One And Two)," "I'm The Leader Of The Gang (I Am)," and "Do You Wanna Touch Me." During his peak, he sold over 18 million records within just five years, achieving international recognition and success across both the United Kingdom and the United States. However, his commercial success waned by the end of the decade, leading to financial difficulties and eventual bankruptcy. Despite several attempts at making a comeback, his last UK top 40 hit came in 1984 with "Another Rock And Roll Christmas." After that, he continued to perform sporadically, often as a novelty act targeting younger audiences.
