MXThe gallery kurimanzutto in Mexico City is hosting an exhibition titled 'John Giorno: LIFE IS A KILLER,' showcasing the poetic works of American artist, activist, and poet John Giorno (1936–2019). This marks the first solo exhibition of his work in Mexico. The exhibit includes a selection of Giorno’s most representative pieces, ranging from early works to those created up until 2015. Visitors can engage with poetry through various mediums such as vinyl records, a 10-hour video by Rirkrit Tiravanija, and a telephone line, reflecting Giorno’s belief that poetry should extend beyond the page into everyday life. Among the featured works is a poem inspired by the trial of Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panthers, and some of Giorno’s earliest 'Poem paintings' from the 1970s. Many of these black-and-white paintings use a custom typeface designed for Giorno in 1984, while later pieces feature rainbow backgrounds to support LGBTQ+ freedom.
