Gaisce Awards see nearly 30,000 register in record figure

The Gaisce Awards, also known as the President's Award, have recorded a new participation high, with nearly 30,000 young people registering for the program in 2025. According to the organization’s latest annual report, 29,299 individuals signed up for the award, with 17,641 completing it. The program, which focuses on personal development and community involvement, continues to attract growing numbers of participants across Ireland. The Gaisce Awards were launched on October 28, 1985, and have since become a cornerstone of youth engagement in the country. This year marks over four decades of continuous operation, with the program evolving to meet the changing needs of young people. The latest figures show a notable increase in both registration and completion rates compared to previous years, highlighting the program's enduring appeal and relevance. Research commissioned by the organizers revealed valuable insights into participant experiences. A survey of 1,000 participants found that 89 percent cited a sense of purpose as the greatest benefit of the program. Additionally, 80 percent of respondents reported increased confidence after earning their award, while 90 percent noted that the experience helped them develop essential lifelong skills. Half of the participants indicated that they plan to apply the skills gained through Gaisce to their future careers. Volunteering was a key component of the program, with participants contributing over 423,000 hours of service to communities throughout Ireland. These efforts spanned a wide range of activities, including environmental conservation, social care, and cultural initiatives, reflecting the diverse opportunities available within the award structure. Avril Ryan, the chief executive of Gaisce, emphasized the significance of these results. She stated that the annual report highlights the increasing engagement and diversity of participants, with more young people than ever before taking part. Ryan highlighted the feedback from awardees, who described the Gaisce framework as more relevant than ever. They credited the program with helping them build self-belief, a sense of purpose, and the autonomy needed to navigate the challenges of modern life. The program is currently offered in 81 percent of secondary schools across Ireland, demonstrating its widespread accessibility and integration into educational institutions. Participation among students in Deis schools, those serving disadvantaged communities, increased by 21 percent last year, underscoring the program's role in supporting marginalized groups and promoting equity in youth development. As the Gaisce Awards continue to expand their reach and impact, the organization remains committed to fostering personal growth and community involvement among young people. With ongoing efforts to enhance program offerings and ensure inclusivity, the Gaisce Awards are poised to play an even greater role in shaping the future of Ireland’s youth.
