A fierce exchange of cross-border attacks erupted between Russia and Ukraine during the night, resulting in at least seven deaths. The violence unfolded amid heightened tensions along their shared border, with both sides accusing each other of escalating hostilities. In southern Russia’s Krasnodar region, an 8-year-old boy was among four fatalities caused by Ukrainian drone strikes, according to regional Governor Venyamin Kondratyev. Meanwhile, two people were killed in Kherson, a frontline city in southern Ukraine, following Russian drone attacks. The attacks began late into the night, with Kondratyev reporting that hundreds of Ukrainian drones struck the region, damaging 21 buildings in the port city of Novorossiysk. Unverified photos circulating on social media showed residential areas with shattered windows and burned-out vehicles. The governor described the situation as chaotic, noting that debris from the drones landed in a private garden in the village of Volna, killing another individual. Two others sustained injuries in the coastal resort town of Gelendzhik. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy claimed his forces conducted a targeted operation against the naval base in Novorossiysk, describing it as the last major stronghold of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea. According to Zelenskyy, the strikes hit air defense systems, piers, and port infrastructure. A video shared on Russian social media depicted the aftermath of the attack, showing orange flashes from air defenses and blue laser beams used to intercept drones. A thick gray cloud lingered over the city after dawn, suggesting extensive damage. Russian military officials stated that their forces shot down 502 Ukrainian drones across the country and the Black Sea during the overnight assault. In contrast, Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched missiles and 138 drones, with 112 of them being intercepted or destroyed. Most of these attacks targeted Ukraine’s southern Odesa region and the northeastern Sumy area. In Kherson, local authorities confirmed that two residents were killed when Russian drones struck the city. One victim was a woman whose home was directly hit. The city continues to suffer frequent civilian casualties due to the presence of Russian troops on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River, which flows through southern Ukraine. The proximity of combat operations to populated areas has led to growing concerns about the safety of non-combatants. Both nations have accused each other of disproportionate attacks. Ukraine claims its actions are justified retaliation for Russia’s ongoing bombardment of Ukrainian cities, which has forced thousands into shelters and resulted in numerous civilian deaths.
