Female tree frogs face challenges in choosing mates due to an overwhelming number of options, according to research published in the journal iScience. Scientists from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville conducted experiments to understand how this phenomenon affects their reproductive success. The study focused on the Cope's gray tree frog (Hyla chrysoscelis), a species native primarily to North America. During mating season, male frogs attract females by inflating their throats and producing high-pitched calls. However, when too many males compete simultaneously, female frogs appear overwhelmed by the cacophony and struggle to make decisions. The researchers created a controlled environment resembling a dating arena for the frogs. Female frogs were placed individually in a two-meter-wide area with controlled ambient noise and temperature levels. Through speakers, recorded calls of male frogs were played, both longer calls associated with more desirable males and shorter distraction calls. When presented with just two call options, female frogs chose the longer call in 77 percent of cases. But when exposed to eight different calls sequentially, they selected the longer one only 25 percent of the time. In some instances, they made no choice at all. The findings suggest that while selecting a male with a pleasing call can provide genetic advantages for offspring, female frogs might not always make optimal choices. This could have implications for the long-term evolution of the species. According to evolutionary theory, less attractive males with shorter calls would typically be eliminated over time. However, the inability of females to consistently choose the best mate might lead to random pairings, preserving genetic diversity within populations. The study highlights the concept of decision fatigue, similar to human experiences with dating apps where excessive choices can lead to exhaustion and indecision. Researchers observed that female frogs did not have trouble distinguishing individual calls, even when other frogs' calls were played in the background to simulate a natural chorus. The challenge lay in the increased number of potential partners making selection difficult. Biologist Jessie Tanner, who led part of the research, emphasized the biological significance of these decisions. She noted that selecting a male with a pleasant call can confer genetic benefits to offspring. Yet, she acknowledged that females might not always be able to make effective choices.
