Chinese scientists have developed a new type of sustainable textile made from a fungus called Cordyceps militaris, which can self-clean and regenerate. The material, created through research led by the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, allows for customization such as adding color or UV protection using additional microorganisms. The study addresses challenges in scaling up engineered living materials (ELMs) by demonstrating the fungus's ability to form durable structures. Environmental tests showed the material degrades within 41 days, suggesting potential applications in circular fashion—clothing designed for reuse or recycling.
