French schoolchild acquitted of sexual assault charges

A French school teacher has been acquitted by a Paris court of charges of sexual abuse against elementary school students. The defendant was previously convicted of eight months' suspended prison sentence for sexual misconduct against his colleagues. Paris police investigated over 100 allegations of poor treatment, physical abuse, and neglect of children aged three to five in French primary and kindergarten schools. The accusations include claims that teachers subjected children to abuse during class time, breaks, and after school. Parents have previously accused teachers of mistreating their children or using physical or sexual abuse. The man acquitted today had been charged with sexual abuse against nine young students aged three to five and sexual harassment against two female colleagues between September 2024 and April 2025. He denied the allegations and was acquitted as the judge determined there was insufficient evidence to prove the accusations. Over the past year, Paris has dismissed 132 schoolteachers, including 52 suspected of sexual offenses against children. The mayor of Paris calls the number concerning and reflects systemic issues that need addressing.
