Three years after the storm, Franja is still waiting for reconstruction: help is coming from near and far

Three years after the devastating earthquake that severely damaged the Partizanska Bolnica Franja, efforts to restore the historic hospital continue with contributions coming both locally and internationally. As of August 12, 2026, over 59,605.94 euros have been collected toward the restoration project, with more than 260 individuals, organizations, and schools from Slovenia and abroad participating in the fundraising campaign. The donations have come from a variety of sources, including 236 individuals, 28 associations, four companies, and even students from primary schools. The funds were gathered during two special events, the commemorative evening marking Franja’s 80th anniversary, titled “Franja, Triumph of Humanity,” and a charity concert called “Bratje, Zapojmo!” Contributions have arrived from Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the Netherlands. While Slovenian donors make up the largest group, Italian contributors follow closely behind. The Mestni Muzej Idrija has emphasized that each contribution plays a valuable role in restoring Franja and preserving its legacy. They expressed sincere gratitude to all donors, noting that their support helps maintain the memory and values associated with this symbol of resilience and compassion. The earthquake in July 2023 caused extensive damage to the Partizanska Bolnica Franja, one of the most recognizable stories of Slovenian resistance during World War II. Despite the passage of three years since the disaster, the work to rebuild and preserve the site continues without pause. The community's commitment to honoring Franja’s history remains strong, driven by both emotional ties and historical significance. Efforts to keep Franja’s story alive include the sale of a commemorative book titled “Franja: Spomin in Opomin.” This publication can be purchased at the Cerkljanski Muzej and the Grad Gewerkenegg, where visitors can learn more about Franja’s history and the ongoing restoration efforts. A notable exhibition, “Partizanska Bolnica Franja, Hidden Gem of Europe,” is currently on display at the Cerkljanski Muzej, offering insights into the challenges faced and the progress made in rebuilding the facility. The Mestni Muzej Idrija has also continued to organize exhibitions of the commemorative book throughout Slovenia, aiming to raise public awareness of the importance of this humanitarian landmark. These initiatives serve to inform the public about the ongoing restoration process and the broader significance of Franja’s legacy. The restoration of Franja represents more than just physical reconstruction, it embodies a collective effort to honor the past while ensuring that its lessons endure for future generations. With continued support from local and international communities, the path forward remains clear, though the journey will require sustained dedication and collaboration.
