Francisco Cerúndolo praises the training of high-level Latin tennis players despite economic challenges

Seven Latin American tennis players have entered the ATP Top 50 rankings, with four being from Argentina. Among them, Francisco Cerúndolo stands out as the highest-ranked player, currently ranked 20th globally. In an interview with El Universal Deportes, Cerúndolo praised the region's ability to produce high-level athletes despite economic and geographical challenges that often hinder sports development in Latin America. Cerúndolo highlighted the significance of tournaments such as the Challenger series in providing more competitive opportunities for young players. This year alone, Argentina hosted eight Challenger events, reflecting a growing commitment to nurturing talent within the country. His recent victory at the ATP 500 tournament in Queen’s Club, London, further underscores this progress. The Argentine player emphasized how these local competitions reduce travel costs and make it easier for players to maintain their careers, especially given financial constraints. His journey began in childhood, playing at a small academy founded by his father. There, he started learning the game alongside his sister and brother Juan Manuel, who is also part of the ATP Top 50. Cerúndolo described Argentina’s unique qualities, its fighting spirit, competitiveness, and determination, as key factors contributing to the success of its tennis players. He noted that while economic conditions pose difficulties, the region has managed to cultivate a strong foundation for developing elite athletes. With ten players from Argentina already in the Top 100, Cerúndolo called this achievement impressive, particularly considering the limited resources available in many parts of the continent. The upcoming challenge for Cerúndolo will be the Open de Los Cabos, where he faces American player Tristan Boyer in the quarterfinals. A win would bring him closer to securing his sixth career title.
