In the cave of Vela Spila on the island of Korčula, Croatia, archaeologists discovered ceramic artifacts dating back approximately 17,000 years. These items, made by shaping clay and firing them in fire, represent one of the earliest known examples of pottery technology in Europe. This discovery challenges previous assumptions that such craftsmanship developed much later, with earlier examples thought to come from the Czech Republic. The findings suggest that technological skills and artistic expression in the Balkans may have evolved significantly earlier than previously believed. The research was conducted by experts from the University of Cambridge in collaboration with Croatian universities and has attracted international attention, including reports from The New York Times.
