The traditional Vaške games in Pernica, Slovenia, brought together locals and revived old customs during their celebration on Sunday, June 25, 2023. The sports park in Pernica hosted the event as part of the festivities marking the Marjetna holiday. A hot summer day saw numerous participants, spectators, and visitors of all ages gather at the local sports field, creating an atmosphere filled with laughter, friendly competition, and goodwill. The afternoon was marked by unity, a spirit of sport, and a sense of community among the residents of Pernica. The local community, working alongside the Perniška POK POKi team, organized the event, which will likely be discussed in the area for years to come. Teams composed of representatives from different villages and associations competed in a variety of fun yet challenging disciplines. One participant from the Lovska družina team emphasized the importance of gathering many people to foster connections and develop a sense of belonging to one’s hometown. “It's important to bring together a lot of people to build relationships and raise awareness that you belong to a place and participate in such events, even if you're not the best,” he said. Participants tested themselves in four disciplines: carrying a log while balancing on one foot, throwing horseshoes, building a pole from wood, and carrying logs. These games introduced spectators to old rural traditions and practices, connecting them to the past in a playful manner. Organizer Gregor Horvat highlighted the purpose of the event: “These games bring people closer to old customs. The aim today is to ensure these traditions don’t get forgotten.” The organizers, the Perniška POK POKi, ensured a pleasant atmosphere by providing cool drinks and offering home-cooked delicacies from the kitchen throughout the day. The event once again proved that the Vaške games are more than just competitions, they serve as opportunities for socializing, intergenerational bonding, and preserving local heritage.
