A quiet electric vehicle, silently navigating the streets of Ljubljana’s city centre each morning, has become more than just a delivery tool, it's a tourist attraction. The autonomous delivery robot, introduced earlier this year by Slovenia’s Post Office, has drawn both practical interest and public curiosity since its debut in early June. Designed to reduce traffic congestion caused by traditional delivery vehicles, the robot has also sparked enthusiasm among visitors and locals alike. If the pilot project proves successful, similar solutions could soon expand beyond Ljubljana across the country. The robot, which operates in a semi-autonomous mode, begins its daily route from Vegova Street, where a designated drop-off zone is marked. It works alongside human operators who load packages into the vehicle and determine the optimal delivery path. While fully autonomous driving is not yet possible, the system is currently operated under supervision with a remote operator monitoring safety and performance. A team of two, postranger Dalibor and assistant Patrik, guides the robot through the city, adjusting its course as needed. The vehicle travels at a maximum speed of three kilometers per hour, ensuring safe navigation through the pedestrian-friendly urban environment. Despite its limited autonomy, the robot has already completed approximately 150 kilometers of test runs, collecting valuable data for further refinement. Its current range allows for around 200 kilometers of travel, with an average daily battery consumption of roughly six percent. The vehicle, stationed temporarily near the market square, serves primarily local businesses such as restaurants and shops located within the city center. This targeted approach aims to evaluate user experience, operational efficiency, integration with existing logistics processes, and environmental impact. Daniel Avdagič, director of AV Living Lab, a company collaborating with Slovenia’s Post Office on the project, notes that the goal is to eventually have the robot operate continuously throughout the day, delivering to multiple locations. “We hope to see the robotic delivery function like courier vehicles, operating all day and reaching more areas,” he says. The project’s initial testing period was planned for one month, but due to positive feedback and ongoing interest, it has been extended to six months. During this time, additional questions will be explored, including potential expansion plans, types of vehicles, and operational timelines. Kristijan Perčič, from the Innovation and Startup Services Department at Postartup Slovenia, explains that the decision to extend the trial reflects the need for deeper insights. “Many questions remain, and we aim to investigate them further. After six months, we plan to present our findings in collaboration with the municipality, exploring possibilities for wider implementation,” he adds. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to find sustainable solutions for urban delivery, particularly in areas closed to motorized traffic. The city center, known for its walkability and historic charm, relies heavily on reliable delivery services. The introduction of the robot represents a step toward modernizing logistics while preserving the area’s character. As the pilot continues, the robot’s role may evolve, from a novelty to a routine part of Ljubljana’s infrastructure. For now, however, it remains a symbol of innovation, quietly moving through the streets, carrying goods and capturing the imagination of those who encounter it.
