The rain didn't stop Liburnicon: Ika became the center of fantasy and pop culture again

The 21st edition of the Liburnicon Festival, themed around "Outlaws," opened today at the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality Management in Ika, despite persistent rain affecting outdoor activities and schedules. The event has transformed into a central hub for fans of science fiction, pop culture, history, science, cosplay, and entertainment. Organized by the non-profit cultural group Kulturni front, the festival aims to provide a mix of educational and entertaining content over two days, drawing large crowds even under less-than-ideal weather conditions. Rainfall impacted the timing and execution of some open-air programs, yet the organizers expressed optimism and successfully attracted numerous attendees. The festival's program includes lectures, panels, quizzes, creative workshops, cosplay competitions, children’s activities, outdoor games, musical performances, and other diverse offerings. A highlight will be a Saturday session featuring guest speaker Božidar Domagoj Burić, a producer and author known for historical documentaries, including projects on uskoks and Croatian kings, as well as an upcoming project focused on Diocletian’s Palace. Burić will discuss the creation of documentaries, how historical events are processed, and how real occurrences evolve into myths and legends over time. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and gain insight into the production of major documentary projects and how history is presented to the broader public. Cosplay plays a special role this year, with international cosplayer Matthias Story, known professionally as Captain Ghostly, traveling from Belgium to participate in the festival. Story will serve as one of the judges in the cosplay competition and will conduct a workshop on costume creation. During his first day at Liburnicon, he praised the unique nature of the event and the hospitality of the local people. He noted that while he has attended many festivals worldwide, including in China and America, the experience in Ika was particularly special and enjoyable. The cosplay competition will feature numerous participants dressed as characters from movies, video games, books, and television series. Special emphasis will be placed on creativity and costume design. Belgian guest Matthias Story will lead a workshop on creating cosplay costumes, offering insights into techniques and processes involved in crafting custom costumes. Among the festival guests is Split-based physicist Ivica Puljak, who delivered a lecture for adults today and will give additional talks, including one tailored for children. His initial presentation aimed to popularize science through the lens of "outlaws in physics." The audience response was overwhelmingly positive. A dedicated section of Liburnicon is designed for children, beginning on Saturday at 1 PM. Activities include creative workshops, storytelling sessions, reading corners, presentations, and various outdoor games. Some workshops will focus on Croatian myths and legends, featuring characters associated with these stories. Themes will also touch upon Croatia’s cultural and historical heritage, with parts of the scientific program adapted for younger audiences. Rain posed minor challenges on the opening day, but the cooler temperatures were welcomed by attendees. This marks the first time since 2017 that rain has affected the festival, though it did not deter participation. Despite the weather, the event continues to thrive, showcasing its resilience and appeal to a wide range of interests.
