Franc Pukšič, former mayor of Destrnik and former MP, has returned home after cycling 5,000 kilometers from Nordkapp to his hometown, raising awareness and funds for eight-year-old Tea Slodnjak from Tržič, who suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The journey, which began at the northernmost point of Europe, passed through Sweden, Baltic states, Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, and ended in Destrnik, was aimed at supporting Tea’s family in their quest for a $2.5 million gene therapy treatment in the United States. Upon arrival in Ptuj, Pukšič was greeted by Tea’s father, David Slodnjak, and members of the Selce Cycling Club, who joined him on the final stretch of the route. They welcomed him with cheers and applause, expressing gratitude for his efforts. Pukšič arrived in Ptuj with two flags, his hometown flag and the Slovenian national flag, symbolizing both local and national support for Tea's cause. He stated, “I am fine. I can’t be better,” reflecting on the physical challenges he faced during the journey. “My tour was meant for little Tea. I hope not only that we collect enough money, but that Tea will also recover.” The fundraising campaign for Tea continues, with donations collected through SMS contributions using the key words TEO5 or TEO10 sent to 1919, or via bank transfer to the account of the Willem Julian Society. The IBAN number is SI56 0400 0028 1688 717, and the reference code is SI00 11777222, under the name “For Tea, Cycling Tour.” The campaign aims to raise the necessary funds for the expensive genetic therapy required for Tea’s condition. Throughout the long journey, Pukšič encountered numerous obstacles, including harsh weather conditions and personal health issues. He described the difficulty of cycling in temperatures ranging from six to seven degrees Celsius, often accompanied by rain and wind. Despite these hardships, his focus remained unwavering: helping Tea and his family. “This child simply needs help,” Pukšič remarked. “Unfortunately, there are many such children in Slovenia. That is why my call is not just for all Slovenians, good people, but also for the Slovenian government. Yesterday, I met with the state secretary at the Ministry of Health and with officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and State Affairs. I explained why I cycled, and they knew, because they followed me through some embassies. The state secretary told me that changes in certain laws are being discussed in coalition negotiations. It is impossible for this burden to remain solely on parents and charity. I understand that part is theirs, but the country must also contribute.” David Slodnjak expressed deep appreciation for Pukšič’s gesture, calling it a heartfelt act. “With words, I cannot describe how much this means to us. This is a challenge even for many young cyclists. Thank you very much for this warm gesture,” he said. According to recent updates from the Willem Julian Society, which organizes the fundraising efforts, over one million euros and 23,000 euros have been collected so far. However, this is still less than half of the required amount. Slodnjak added, “We were not expecting this news, that the ZZZS has rejected our application for treatment in the US. Therefore, we rely on people like Pukšič and hope for the kindness of all Slovenians to help us. It seems there is no other path.” Numerous volunteers continue to gather funds for Tea at various events. The family and volunteers urge everyone who wishes to help to remain hopeful and contribute. Tea, who is cheerful, lively, and happy, enjoys playing football, laughing with friends, and spending time with his older brother. His future depends on the success of the fundraising campaign.
