Fossil study finds vision—not the 'thinking' frontal lobe—drove varied brain development in primates

A new study challenges the traditional view that the expansion of the primate neocortex was driven by the frontal lobe associated with higher reasoning. Led by Duke University researcher Richard F. Kay, the research suggests that vision played a more significant role in driving brain development in primates. Using virtual endocasts created from skull data, the study found that while the frontal lobe grows proportionally with overall brain size, the occipital, parietal, and temporal regions, which process visual information, showed rapid and disproportionate expansion in certain primate groups like tarsiers and anthropoids. This growth coincided with increases in the size of the optic nerve, indicating enhanced visual processing capabilities. The findings suggest that visual demands, rather than cognitive specialization, may have been a key driver in the evolution of complex primate brains.
