Initially thought to be a crustacean larva, advanced imaging techniques revealed it to be a female insect, named Chosha praecursor, meaning 'predecessor insect.' This discovery provides critical information about how insects transitioned from water to land. The fossil exhibits features typical of modern insects, such as two antennae and six legs, but also has characteristics resembling crustaceans, including a segmented tail and paddle-like appendages possibly used for swimming or respiration. The fossil was found in the Tesnus Formation in western Texas, likely a coastal area with shallow water during the creature’s lifetime. Additional similar fossils were discovered in Scotland and Illinois, suggesting this transitional species may have lived in moist or semi-aquatic environments.
