An archaeological excavation has been conducted at Laugavegar 1, one of the oldest houses in Reykjavík. The house, originally built in 1848 by Gustav Ahrenz, was recently demolished and is being rebuilt in its original form. Archaeologist Sólveig Guðmundsdóttir discovered remnants of 19th-century household items, including furniture, dishes, and glasses, which were used by the family that lived there until 1903. The site also revealed evidence of earlier structures, as historical maps show no buildings existed there before the house was constructed. The project includes using original building materials where possible, with salvaged elements stored until construction begins. Visual representations of the completed house are available online.
