A study published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa highlights that electrocution from power infrastructure poses a significant but underreported threat to vultures in the Dehradun area of Uttarakhand, India. Researchers identified 46 vulture carcasses linked to electrocution near high-tension power lines between 2011 and 2014. To address this, local authorities moved livestock carcass dumps approximately 2.4 km away from the dangerous infrastructure in 2015. Post-relocation monitoring showed no further electrocution incidents, suggesting that such measures could effectively reduce risks for vultures and other scavenger species like the Himalayan griffon, Eurasian griffon, and cinereous vulture. The study emphasizes the importance of relocating carcass sites to protect vulnerable bird populations.
