Fund: Six bids for the remediation of illegally deposited waste in Samobor

The Environmental Protection and Energy Efficiency Fund has received six bids for the remediation of illegally dumped waste in Vrbovec Samoborski, a location within the town of Samobor. The estimated procurement value for this project stands at around 3.84 million euros. According to the fund, these bids were submitted in accordance with legal procedures and will now undergo thorough evaluation by a professional committee. Following this review process, the fund will make a decision on which contractor will carry out the work, as outlined in its official statement released on Tuesday. According to estimates, approximately eight thousand tons of improperly disposed waste are currently located at the site. Plastic constitutes nearly three-quarters of the total volume, while the remaining portion includes packaging materials, tires, paper, cardboard, and smaller quantities of metal and mixed household waste. About 70 percent of the waste is contained in bales, while the rest is scattered across the terrain and partially degraded due to prolonged exposure to weather conditions. The method of handling the waste will be determined by the selected contractor, following the proposed remediation plan and the terms specified in the procurement documentation. The environmental protection fund emphasized that the remediation project in Samobor is part of a broader initiative aimed at removing illegally dumped waste, particularly at sites where waste was not removed despite previous orders issued by competent authorities. In addition to Samobor, the fund received a bid last week for the remediation of two locations in Poznanovc. As part of efforts to address illegal dumping, the fund plans to issue public tenders for the removal and processing of illegally dumped waste in parts of the Velebit Nature Park area in Gospić, based on recommendations from the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition. This initiative is included in the Waste Management Plan of the Republic of Croatia. At the same time, documentation for the remediation of a site in Pazin is being prepared. Once all necessary formal and legal requirements are fulfilled, the fund intends to initiate activities related to the remediation of sites in Benkovc and Lovinc in the near future, according to the fund's announcement. These actions reflect a coordinated approach to addressing the problem of illegal waste disposal across multiple locations, aligning with national strategies for waste management and environmental protection. The situation in Samobor highlights the ongoing challenges associated with managing and eliminating illegally dumped waste, which often accumulates over extended periods and poses significant environmental risks. The presence of large volumes of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials underscores the need for comprehensive and sustainable solutions. The involvement of multiple contractors in the bidding process indicates a competitive market for such projects, although the final selection will depend on the evaluation criteria set by the fund’s professional committee.
