Flood-hit Geoje, Tongyeong designated special disaster zones as recovery continues

South Korean officials have designated entire regions of Geoje and parts of Tongyeong in South Gyeongsang Province as special disaster zones following severe flooding caused by record-breaking rains earlier this month. Geoje qualified for citywide status because the estimated damages surpassed the 10.25 billion won ($7.4 million) threshold required for such a classification. In contrast, Tongyeong did not meet the higher standard for a citywide designation, though two of its townships and neighborhoods individually crossed the lower 1.025 billion won threshold applicable at the local level. The extreme weather event began on August 15 and continued through August 17, bringing unprecedented levels of precipitation to the area. Geoje recorded 954.8 millimeters of rainfall during that period, while Tongyeong received 763 millimeters. This deluge resulted in extensive flooding, landslides, and road closures, prompting evacuations and leaving one person dead due to a landslide in Geoje. The impact was felt across both cities, with homes, businesses, and public facilities suffering significant damage. Recovery efforts are ongoing, with military personnel and volunteers working tirelessly to clear debris and restore essential services. Navy teams have been deployed to assist in flood recovery operations in Hansan-myeon, Tongyeong, where they are helping to remove mud and debris from affected areas. In Geoje, volunteer firefighters are engaged in similar tasks in Seonchang Village, Irun-myeon, while community members help salvage water-damaged goods from flooded shops in Okpo-dong. The scale of the cleanup underscores the severity of the damage inflicted by the storms. Local authorities are continuing their assessments of the affected areas to determine whether additional regions should be included under the disaster zone designation. This process involves evaluating the extent of damage and estimating the necessary funds for reconstruction.
