During the winter months, the station will accommodate 12 individuals, including six scientists, while the summer season will see up to 18 people aboard. Crew members were chosen based on rigorous medical and psychological evaluations, as well as team-building exercises. The focus was not on individual adventure but on creating a cohesive group capable of enduring the challenges of a confined, isolated environment. “We weren’t looking for adventurers who want to head to the North Pole alone,” explained Clementine Moulin, the expedition director. “The idea is rather to have people who get along well to experience this confined human environment together.” Those remaining on board during the winter will face five months of continuous darkness, extreme cold, and the ever-present danger of polar bears. Eric Pelletier, a 58-year-old genomics researcher and crew member, emphasized the seriousness of the threat posed by these predators. “Bears are a serious matter,” he said. “It's not a simple thing, the bear is on its home turf and it's used to hunting and hides behind blocks of ice.” To address this risk, all crew members have undergone firearms training, and a specially trained dog will accompany them to assist in detecting approaching animals. Scientific work aboard the station will involve collecting over 10,000 samples from the water, atmosphere, and sea ice using specialized equipment. Researchers hope to gain insights into the unique biodiversity of the North Pole, which has evolved to thrive in extreme conditions. “There is biodiversity at the North Pole that is uniquely adapted to this environment,” noted Romain Trouble, executive director of the Tara Ocean Foundation. “If the environment changes, that biodiversity might disappear.” He warned that such a loss could mean losing an entire chapter of evolutionary history on Earth. “We could potentially lose an entire chapter of evolution of life on this planet without even having had time to document it,” he added.
