Five arrested, boat seized after video of meat, liquor party on Ganga goes viral

A recent incident involving a chicken-and-beer party on a boat in the sacred Ganges River in Varanasi has sparked significant public reaction and legal action. Five individuals were arrested following the circulation of a video that allegedly showed them cooking chicken and consuming beer on a vessel floating in the middle of the river. At that time, a written complaint was filed by Rajat Jaiswal, the chief of the BJP Yuva Morcha city unit. A sessions court in Varanasi denied bail to these accused individuals, citing concerns over their intent to disrupt social harmony. However, the Allahabad High Court later granted bail to the youths, noting that their actions had caused offense to the Hindu community.

The latest incident adds to the growing list of controversies related to activities on the Ganges, particularly concerning the consumption of alcohol and non-vegetarian food. In May, another video surfaced showing a young man allegedly drinking beer while bathing in the Ganges, which triggered widespread outrage among the public. The Dashashwamedh police responded by registering an FIR against an unidentified person and initiating an investigation into the matter.
