First Daily convenes national dialogue on security as Nigeria’s security, political, cultural leaders meet

On Tuesday, 28 July 2026, Nigeria's First Daily newspaper hosted a high-level National Dialogue on Security at the Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja. The event aimed to address the growing concerns over the country's security situation, which has deteriorated significantly in recent years due to various factors such as terrorism, banditry, and communal clashes. The dialogue was themed "Declaration of State of Emergency on Insecurity: Matching Words with Action," highlighting the urgency of the issue and the need for immediate action. Retired General Martin Luther Agwai chaired the event, while retired General Lucky Irabor delivered the keynote address. Political figures from various parties participated in the dialogue, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Seriake Dickson, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi, and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate. Their involvement highlighted the necessity of cross-party cooperation to find sustainable solutions to the ongoing security issues. Cultural organizations such as Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Afenifere, the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), PANDEF, and the Ijaw National Congress (INC) contributed their insights, reflecting the diverse perspectives needed to understand and resolve the underlying causes of insecurity. These groups represent various ethnic communities and have historically played a crucial role in shaping national discourse. The dialogue featured discussions among security experts, policymakers, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, diplomats, media representatives, academics, and youth delegates.
