Firefighters struggle to contain deadly Greek wildfire

A devastating wildfire has erupted in northern Greece, claiming two lives and leaving one person missing as emergency services work tirelessly to contain the flames. The incident occurred near the village of Liti, approximately 15 kilometers northwest of Thessaloniki, a major city in northern Greece. As the situation unfolded, authorities confirmed the discovery of a male body in a burned-out area close to Liti. Later, another unidentified body was found inside a house located in a forested region near the village. A woman who was rescued from the vicinity of the house suffered severe burn injuries but is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. Meanwhile, reports indicate that a 12-year-old child remains missing, believed to be the son of the deceased man and the injured woman.

Emergency responders have mobilized extensively to tackle the blaze, deploying more than 100 firefighters, numerous fire engines, and at least seven aircraft. Despite these efforts, the fire continues to pose significant challenges due to the prevailing weather conditions. High winds and dry weather have exacerbated the situation, contributing to the rapid spread of the flames and complicating containment operations.

The region where the fire started was already under a high wildfire risk alert, highlighting the precarious environmental conditions that have made such incidents increasingly frequent during the summer months. Residents of Liti were urgently advised to evacuate their homes as the fire approached. According to reports from Greek broadcaster ERT, several properties in the area had sustained damage from the fire, which was advancing toward the neighboring village of Melissochori by Tuesday evening.
