Vacation Schleswig-Holstein 2026: holidaymakers flock to SH - demand is lower in some places

As of early July 2026, Schleswig-Holstein is experiencing varied booking levels ahead of the summer school holidays (July 4 to August 15). Some coastal areas like Sylt, Föhr, Amrum, Helgoland, and the Halligen islands are seeing high demand, with occupancy rates exceeding 80 percent. However, other regions remain less booked. The overall situation is described as 'good to satisfactory,' though not reaching last year's levels. Many tourists are making short-term bookings, often just weeks or days before their arrival, which poses challenges for businesses seeking predictability. Despite this trend, many tourism operators remain optimistic about the season. On Fehmarn, while there is strong interest during mid-July to mid-August, some accommodations remain available. In Grömitz, the most requested period runs from July 18 to August 16, with around 92% occupancy. In contrast, Kiel has seen lower booking numbers compared to 2025.

As summer approaches in 2026, the tourism landscape in Schleswig-Holstein reveals a mixed picture of demand and availability. With school holidays beginning on July 4th and ending on August 15th, many accommodations across the northernmost German state have already seen significant bookings. According to the Tourism Agency of Schleswig-Holstein (Tash), some areas are experiencing high occupancy rates, while others remain relatively underbooked. This variation highlights the diverse appeal of different regions within the state.

The agency's spokesperson noted that the booking situation is "colorful," indicating that certain locations are well-booked, while others are less so. Notably, several classic coastal towns along both the Baltic Sea and North Sea are witnessing strong interest, with some areas reporting occupancy levels exceeding 80 percent. However, despite these high numbers, there are still free accommodations available in nearly all regions, particularly during peak holiday periods when popular days might become fully booked. The spokesperson emphasized that flexibility can help travelers find options even during busy times.

An emerging trend across Schleswig-Holstein involves shorter-term bookings, where tourists increasingly decide on their travel plans based on weather conditions, often just weeks or even days before arrival. This shift poses challenges for businesses, as they prefer more predictable planning. Despite this, many tourism professionals remain optimistic about the upcoming season, anticipating additional bookings in the coming weeks.

On the island of Fehmarn, the traditional main tourist season from mid to late July until mid-August has been highly sought after. Nevertheless, there are still available capacities during this period and throughout other summer weeks. In Grömitz, the most inquiries and bookings for July and August are received at the local tourism service center. At the start of the summer holidays, there are currently still free capacities available in Grömitz. The most heavily booked period in the summer is from July 18th to August 16th, according to Tash, with occupancy rates reaching approximately 92 percent between mid-July and mid-August.

Despite the high occupancy rates, spontaneous travelers can still find limited availability even during the peak season. For instance, during the last weekend of August, which hosts the event "Ostsee in Flammen," the area will be almost completely booked. Similarly, in Timmendorfer Strand, the overall booking situation for the summer holidays of 2026 remains on a pleasant level.

Contrasting this, the situation in Kiel appears less favorable compared to the previous year. Currently, the booking rate in the area around Kiel and the Kieler Förde is below the previous year’s level, with an occupancy rate of 53 percent. However, experts in Kiel expect a short-term increase in booking figures. In Flensburg, the demand has also been somewhat subdued thus far, with current bookings about 15 percent lower than the previous year. Nonetheless, larger vacation homes and houses are already well booked, whereas smaller accommodations for two to three people still offer ample capacity.

This pattern of a cautious start to the season is reflected in the preliminary figures for Travemünde, where occupancy rates fluctuate slightly between 50 and 60 percent, significantly lower than the average of 85 percent recorded in the previous year. In Lübeck, the numbers vary greatly throughout the holidays, ranging from 30 percent in August up to 70 percent on weekends during the first half of the holiday period. These fluctuations underscore the dynamic nature of the tourism market in Schleswig-Holstein, influenced by multiple factors including seasonal trends, local events, and changing consumer behavior.
