A new Israeli study suggests that focusing on pain rather than distracting oneself from it may accelerate recovery from inflammation, according to research published in Nature Human Behaviour. The study, conducted by researchers at Bar-Ilan University, involved 57 participants aged 20 to 45. They were subjected to a controlled method of inducing acute inflammation known as a histamine skin prick test, similar to an allergy test. This caused immediate visible signs of inflammation, redness and a raised bump, on the participants' arms. The inflammation typically subsided within 20 to 30 minutes. Participants were divided into two groups: one was instructed to focus their attention on the sensations in the inflamed area, while the other watched videos to distract themselves from the discomfort. Researchers monitored both groups using standard tools such as rulers to measure swelling and redness, along with tracking physiological indicators including heart rate, skin temperature, pulse, and breathing rate. Results showed that nearly 90 percent of individuals who paid close attention to their inflamed areas exhibited significantly reduced symptoms compared to those who remained distracted. Swelling and redness were approximately 1.5 times smaller in the group that focused on their pain. These findings suggest that directed attention can influence the body's ability to manage inflammation in real-time. Dr. Liron Rozenkrantz, an assistant professor at Bar-Ilan University’s Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, described the discovery as the most striking effect she had encountered in her 20-year career studying human behavior. She emphasized that the study provides the first evidence in humans that cognitive processes can directly affect biological inflammation. Rozenkrantz noted that the research builds upon the concept of the placebo effect, where belief in treatment effectiveness can lead to actual improvements in health outcomes. Dr. Nofar Mizrachi, who led the research alongside Prof. Menachem Rottem from Emek Medical Center in Afula, explained that the team aimed to investigate whether directing mental focus towards an injury could influence its healing process. This study challenges that view by demonstrating measurable differences in inflammation levels based on participants’ attentional focus.
