Astronomers using China's FAST radio telescope have discovered two massive hydrogen clouds near the Whirlpool galaxy (M51) that appear to lack any associated stars. These clouds, named Cloud N and Cloud S, each contain approximately 3 million times the mass of the Sun in hydrogen but show no detectable optical counterparts. The findings, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, suggest these could be 'reionization-limited H I clouds' (RELHICs), dark-matter halos where gas remains too warm to form stars due to ultraviolet radiation. The study supports the Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM) model, which posits that many low-mass dark-matter halos fail to form galaxies due to suppressed star formation.
