The Spanish judiciary has investigated a detoxification center in Girona, called Sinopsis Paso a Paso, over allegations of fraud, labor intrusion, and violations of public health laws. The center operated multiple facilities in areas like Figueres, Vilanant, and Girona without proper licensing or qualified professionals. Families reported paying between €4,000 and €5,000 monthly for their relatives' treatment, only to discover the centers lacked authorized staff and permits. In April 2025, the regional health authority ordered the closure of the largest facility in Vilanant after finding it unauthorized and registered as a tourist establishment rather than a healthcare provider. The investigation includes examining whether the handling of medications violated regulations and could constitute a crime against public health. Two founders, Erik Berjano and Danny Bowling, have been named as suspects. This case follows similar investigations into other addiction treatment centers, such as those run by Luis Pérez under the brand Zeus.
