Families mourn 26 killed in deadly Sri Lanka prison riot

A deadly prison riot at Negombo Prison in Sri Lanka resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including seven prison officials and 19 inmates. The conflict, which lasted two days, began after some prisoners leaked information about drug-smuggling attempts to prison staff. The overcrowded facility, housing 2,400 inmates despite a capacity of around 650, contributed to the tensions. Relatives of victims expressed grief and disbelief, with one relative describing the loss of a close family member who was more like a brother. The deceased prison officials were transported to Welikada Prison in Colombo for families to claim their bodies, while the bodies of the inmates were also released to their families. This incident marks one of the deadliest prison riots in recent Sri Lankan history.
